- Taught by professor John Malinoski, Design Center is a service-learning course that operates as a small design studio within the VCU Graphic Design Department. Each semester interested students apply with a portfolio submission, and only eight are accepted. Upon entry to Design Center, each student becomes the project-manager for a client, thus responsible for all communications between the group and client, keeping the project on schedule, and keeping the other members informed of the client’s needs. While each student is a project manager, that does not mean they only work on that job – each student works on all jobs currently active within the studio, performing various tasks as needed. The studio primarily focuses on work for non-profit and community organizations, but also does work for various VCU departments. All work done by Design Center is pro-bono. The students are unpaid, and only receive school credit (along with some amazing experience!).
